Computer Requirements

  • PC (not Mac)
  • Internet Access
  • Internet Explorer 4.0 and above or Netscape 7.0 and above
  • Browser scripting must be enabled
  • Email account, with the ability to send text files readable by MS Word
  • Recommended minimal hardware configuration of 450 MHz CPU and 128M of RAM
  • It is recommended to have DSL or cable access, as it makes it faster to access information, but dial-up is certainly acceptable.

Internet Access
Doctoral scholarly writing learners are expected to conduct extensive Internet searches on Google Scholar and through other search engines and must have at-home Internet access.

Occasionally there is a charge per paper from some of the scholarly paper providers.  We recommend never paying for a paper.  If you are already enrolled in a university, most universities offer free access to search programs such as XanEdu, Academic Search Premier, LexisNexis Academic, ProQuest Psychology Journal Locator, Business Source Premier, etc.

To maximize your search power and minimize the time it takes to find appropriate articles, FIRST use Google Scholar to locate articles.  For any article that has a charge attached to it found in Google Scholar, then go to your university's search engine and look up the specific article.

Searching a university search engine first is often far less productive than Google Scholar.
