Need to Pass the Writing Portion of the CBEST test?   We get results.

  • Write Well, Write Now, Inc. provides expert, attentive service and outstanding instruction in writing designed to help adults gain the proficiencies they need to pass their CBEST test and become teachers.

When do I need Write Well, Write Now writing instruction to help me pass the CBEST™ test?

When you have already taken the entire examination at least once and have failed the writing portion.

Do not sign up for instruction from us if you have never taken the CBEST™ test before.  It is likely that you will pass the test if you simply purchase a Barron's CBEST book (or other CBEST test prep book) and work through the practice examinations in the month before the test.

The cost of the test is only $40.  It can be taken repeatedly.  Try taking the test first – see if you can pass.  If you do…great!!!  Congratulations!  You're on your way to becoming a teacher.  If you do not pass the writing segment, then our Write Well, Write Now USA course will be of benefit.

Our goal is to help people who are struggling to pass this test – we do not want to take money from people who will pass it easily on their first try.

Text Box: Free CBEST Writing Analysis:

Have you already failed the writing portion of the CBEST™ test at least once? If you have, we will analyze your writing for free. Send an email to FreeWritingSample@WriteWellWriteNowUSA.com requesting a free CBEST writing analysis and we will be happy to analyze your writing. We will send you a writing prompt and ask you to write for 30 minutes using paper and pencil. You will then mail or fax us your writing sample.

We do not like to see computer-typed samples because they are not "authentic" to the test. Since the test is administered with paper and pencil, it is best if we see exactly how you write in similar conditions. We'll give you an honest evaluation of your content, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, word usage, and analysis skills along with some pointers designed to give you the information you may need to help you pass the test.

This is a free service and is sometimes all it takes to give an individual the information needed to pass the test. There is no obligation to purchase any of our writing services if you have your writing analyzed by a member of our staff.

Why offer a free writing analysis?

As a Christian run organization, our goal and our mission is to teach people to write proficiently.  There are many, many people who need help in improving their writing.  Studies have shown that 2/3 of college students are unprepared for college-level writing, and 1/3 of master's students (including many already credentialed teachers!) are unable to write at a graduate level.  Second language learners, those with a learning handicap/disability, and adults who simply have not had the time to be able to work on their writing or who were never given good instruction in school benefit from our services.  We are more than happy to provide an honest evaluation of an individual's writing at no cost.  It makes for a win-win situation:  Some people need our services in order to meet their goals; others do not.  Either way, we're happy to be of assistance.

Some Quick Facts about the CBEST™ Test:

  • The California Basic Educational Skills Test is THE test required to become a teacher in the State of California .  It is also required in the State of Oregon .

  • All substitute and regular classroom teachers must pass this test in order to get a job in California as well as have a Bachelor's Degree.

  • Teacher candidates must pass all three sections of the test (reading, mathematics, and writing) to pass the CBEST  test.

  • The test is 4 hours long and costs $40 each time no matter how many sections are taken.  The exam may be divided up any way the candidate prefers:  One, Two, or Three segments may be taken at once.  The exam is given six times a year.  A passing score is 51.25% per section.

  • A total of 123 points on all three sections combined is considered the lowest passing score.  A student who has a VERY high pass in one area may have a slightly lower score in another area, so long as NO area drops below 37 points.

Many candidates fail one or more sections of the test.  The likelihood of passing the CBEST ™ test goes down with each successive examination.  In other words, the more often a candidate takes a section over again, the more likely he or she will continue to fail the section.  If you have already failed the writing portion once or more than once, you will likely benefit from our calm, supportive, expert writing instruction.

Why Do People Fail Over and Over Again?  Test takers often use the same or similar study techniques when they attempt to pass a test.  If their techniques did not work the first time, they are not likely to work the second, third, and succeeding times.  Einstein's definition of insanity was, "Doing the same thing over and over again, yet expecting different results."  The key, then, is to do something different.   Write Well, Write Now can help.

There are several reasons why a person cannot pass a particular section on the CBEST:

1)  Test Taking Anxiety – Some individuals get particularly nervous when confronted with a test.  Good preparation and familiarity with the test, along with a healthy dose of confidence brought about by knowing the subject-matter content helps alleviate test anxiety.

2)  Poor Test-Taking Skills – There are very simple ways to learn test taking skills.  A person who is savvy at test taking itself stands a much better chance of passing the test than one who does not.  The Write Well, Write Now mentor teacher understands the ins and outs of test taking and helps to alleviate this problem by explaining exactly how to take a standardized test.

3)   Lack of Preparation – There are people who desire to pass the test, but who have not put in the time and effort it takes to prepare for it.  If a student is lacking in subject matter understanding, no amount of test-taking skills or confidence will substitute for simply learning the necessary content.  Write Well, Write Now, Inc. helps students prepare for the writing segment of the test through repeated practice, coaching, support, and gentle, on-target critique designed to increase CBEST™ writing skills.

4)  Low level reading skills.  The English/Language Arts test questions are written at the 9th and 10th grade reading level.  A person without at least a 10 th grade vocabulary will not be able to pass segments of the CBEST™ test.   We can give the assistance necessary to bring up reading skills to the requisite levels.

5)  Lack of Understanding of Current Issues in the Classroom.  One of the two essays asks teachers to analyze a complex question relating to a controversial topic in the education of our youth.  A potential candidate must understand and be able to analyze and then explain in coherent, lucid, clear English their point of view on the topic.

6)  Lack of Savvy in Writing the Personal Essay.  Some candidates have difficulty appropriately writing an answer to the "personal essay."  Our expert mentor teachers have a great deal of experience in helping writers understand what a winning essay looks and sounds like.  We can help you learn to write an essay that will not offend the judges, but instead will make them weep with joy.

What if I've failed the writing portion 7 or 8 times?

It is possible that a great deal of practice may be needed in order to pass the CBEST™ writing portion.  Second language learners or those with a writing disability may need up to a full year of instruction and practice in order to gain the necessary writing skills.  Our year long writing tutoring program, priced at around $100 per month, is excellent for those who need more than a few weeks of instruction.

What if I've failed the writing portion only once?

You be the judge:  If your score is close to passing, you may need only 2 - 4 weeks of instruction and practice to pass the test.  If you are farther away and have some significant writing challenges, you may need 8 weeks or more of instruction.  Write Well, Write Now will give you an honest analysis based upon a free writing sample evaluation.  We're not in this business to strip people of their money:  We're in this business to honestly and accurately provide excellent writing instruction designed to help people meet their career, personal, and writing goals.   You may not need our writing instruction at all – it could be that a few free pointers are enough to help you pass the test.  Feel free to submit a writing sample (see the box above to learn how) so we can help analyze your writing skills.
